Chocolate Footprints

Sophie leaves a trail of chocolate footprints whenever she walks. If she laughs, everyone around her becomes blonde. Bird songs fill the air when she is happy. When Leila’s family moves to a new home in the country, she is intrigued by    an old oak tree in the middle of the front yard. With its knotted trunk, twisted branches and ruffled leaves, it reminds her of her grandfather. He had died a few months earlier, before she could share a secret with him.


The oak tree has a secret. When Leila lowers herself into the hollow trunk, she is transported to a fairy land where she meets a tree sprite: Jimmurai. As Leila discovers how Jimmurai has been a part of her past, she must race to save the Oak scheduled to be uprooted.

Spencer Wade likes to hide behind a dim-witted smile, it makes life easy. His grades are low, but his teachers don’t bother him. He has fun taunting the local bullies, stealing their cigarettes and throwing them in the stream. He doesn’t even mind getting a black eye once in a while. But when he’s alone in his room he reads his favorite books on quantum physics and on the universe.

The simplicity of his life comes to an end when Tyler Braxton, the meanest tenth grader, decides to recruit Spencer and make him work for Lucifer, the local drug lord. Tyler works the streets, delivering drugs for Lucifer and selling weed and stolen cigarettes. But when he is home, he takes care of his sick grandmother, giving her all his money and buying her medicines.

Daniel Copeland, Spencer’s teacher, discovers his genius and the great power of his mind. Spencer is capable of opening other dimensions and looking into the past or into other parts of the world. Daniel has a love interest, Loren. She has two daughters, Myriam, Spencer’s girlfriend, and Lily, who has a psychic connection to Spencer.

And somehow, Lucifer becomes aware of Spencer’s powers, putting him and his friends and family in danger.

Spencer finds an unlikely refuge on the island of Iwo Jima during WWII. After reading the first few pages of a book his history-loving father gives him, Spencer decides to visit the historical figure depicted in the book. He opens a dimension and meets General Kuribayashi, the Japanese general who led the defense of Iwo Jima.

Will Tyler succeed in recruiting Spencer? Will Daniel be able to protect his students? And what impact can a historical figure who has been dead over half a century have on Spencer’s life?
